Police Advisory Board

A Police Board has been established in the City of Concordia. The Board includes one Alderman Representative, who is appointed by the Mayor, and six citizens of the City with interest in Police operations, also appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Board of Aldermen. Police Board members serve a three year term. As a minimum, the Police Board meets quarterly. In general, the Police Board acts in an advisory capacity to the City Administrator and Police Chief on matters relating to the operation of the Police Department. They advise the Board of Aldermen on policy issues, ordinances, and public opinion in regard to law enforcement.

Specifically, duties include the following:
  1. Develop and recommend policies regarding law enforcement.
  2. Review and recommend revisions to outdated law enforcement ordinances.
  3. Review and comment on new proposed law enforcement ordinances.
  4. Advise the City Administrator and Police Chief on perceptions and views of citizens.
  5. Support Police actions and take a positive position with the public in regard to Police actions.
  6. Suggest community policing activities.
  7. Receive citizen complaints and forward to the City Administrator and Police Chief.
  8. Encourage citizens to use proper complaint procedures. A personal appearance before the Board is permissible if so desired.
  9. Advise and make recommendations regarding Police operating procedures.
  10. Review and recommend traffic control devices within the city.
  11. Assist the City Administrator to recruit and hire a Police Chief should a vacancy exist.
  12. Assist the City Administrator and Police Chief in interviewing and hiring Police officers if such help is requested.
